Label Maker or 4x6 Shipping Printer? Avoid the Wrong Purchase
Small inventory labels and carrier shipping labels are different jobs. Check print width, file support and supplies before buying.
Shipping gear for Etsy, eBay and Shopify sellers
Plain-spoken guides to 4x6 label printers, labels, scales and packaging for people who pack their own orders. We work from maker specs, platform help pages and seller reports, and we say where each claim came from.
The signature tool
Type your orders per week, labels per order, the labels on one roll and what your own supplier charges for it. You get labels per month, rolls per month and a cost per label, worked out in your browser. The tool never shows a price of its own.
The packing slip
At 30 orders a week with 1 label each, you print about 130 labels a month. A 250-label roll lasts about 8 weeks, so you go through 0.52 rolls a month.
The working: labels per month = orders per week × labels per order × 4.33 weeks. Rolls per month = labels per month ÷ labels per roll. Cost per label = your roll price ÷ labels per roll.
The sum is the same: count the labels in the stack or on the roll. What differs is the format your printer takes. Fanfold is a flat stack folded between labels; a roll winds onto a core. Some printers are tied to their maker’s labels (Brother’s QL needs its DK rolls, and the DYMO 4XL needs DYMO-compatible rolls), while Rollo says any direct thermal label from 1.57 to 4.1 inches wide works. Check your printer’s own page before you buy a case of either, then compare formats on the cost per label from your own invoices.
The compatibility ledger
Each line quotes what the platform’s own documentation lists, and says how firmly we confirmed it. A printer a platform does not list is undocumented there, not proven broken: we make no claim either way. Pages last read in October 2026.
| Platform | The platform’s own documentation lists… | How firmly we confirmed it |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Shopify's supported-printers page lists exactly five: the DYMO LabelWriter 5XL, Brother QL-1110NWB, Zebra ZD220, Zebra ZD421 and Rollo X1038. It does not list the DYMO 4XL, the Rollo X1040, MUNBYN or Phomemo. | Page read |
| Pirate Ship | Pirate Ship's printer page says its labels are PDFs that work with any printer that supports 4x6 paper, and it recommends the Brother QL-1110NWB and QL-1100. Its getting-started page says a regular printer on 8.5 x 11 paper works too, so thermal is optional. | Page read |
| ShipStation | ShipStation's printing-basics page names DYMO, Zebra and Brother printers, and any supported USB 4x6 printer. | Summary only |
| Etsy | Etsy's shipping-label help page says to choose 4 in x 6 in when you print a label. | Summary only |
| eBay | We did not find an official eBay printer page. Sellers in eBay’s community forum describe a 4x6 PDF print-format setting; that is seller experience, not eBay documentation. | Seller posts |
What the makers and Google say about the three ways a 4x6 printer reaches your computer or phone.
“Summary only” means we saw the claim in a search-result summary of the page and have not re-read the page itself, so treat it as unconfirmed. Check your exact model on the maker’s page and your platform’s page before you buy; model names change.
One axis, one call
Drivers, connections and labels: which 4x6 printer fits a home shop
Decide by how you will connect. If you print from a computer and want the fewest driver questions, Rollo documents its Wireless model as needing no Mac driver. If you want Bluetooth from a phone, read the exact MUNBYN model's page first, because what one model supports another may not.
Printer, labels and the yearly label bill
The difference is how much choice you have over labels. Rollo says any direct thermal label from 1.57 to 4.1 inches wide works; the 4XL needs DYMO-compatible rolls. Put the labels each one takes into the Label Cost Calculator and compare cost per label before you settle on the printer.
Platform support and connections: is a Zebra worth it for a home seller
If you sell on Shopify, its own list is the tiebreaker: it names the Zebra ZD421, and the Rollo it names is the X1038, not the wireless X1040. Off Shopify, Pirate Ship says any printer that supports 4x6 paper works, so the choice comes down to the connection and the system you print from.
Do you need Wi-Fi? Drivers and platform lists
If you sell on Shopify and want a printer on its list, the X1038 is the Rollo it names. If you want to print from a phone or tablet, or skip the Mac driver, Rollo documents the X1040 for that. Pirate Ship's troubleshooting page notes that Rollo labels can look pixelated, so check the 4x6 paper setting either way.

No. Pirate Ship says any desktop printer on 8.5 x 11 paper works for its labels, so thermal is optional. A 4x6 thermal printer is a convenience upgrade: it prints labels in the size the platforms ask for, and it becomes worth considering as the number of labels you print grows. The Label Cost Calculator shows how many you print a month.
Shopify's supported-printers page lists exactly five: the DYMO LabelWriter 5XL, Brother QL-1110NWB, Zebra ZD220, Zebra ZD421 and Rollo X1038. It does not list the DYMO 4XL, the Rollo X1040, MUNBYN or Phomemo. A printer that is not on the list is undocumented there, not proven broken.
Start with the connection. Google's Chromebook printing page says Chromebooks do not support Bluetooth printing; a USB cable and IPP are the routes. Rollo lists its X1040 as printing from Chromebook, and MUNBYN's 941B is described as connecting computers and Chromebooks by USB (a maker listing we have not re-read). Check the exact model's page.
No. Carrier rates, surcharges and dimensional-weight divisors change, and per-label prices published around the web disagree, so we print none. We link out to the platforms and carriers for current numbers, and the Label Cost Calculator works from the price you type.
