Which label printers work with Shopify, eBay, Etsy, Pirate Ship and ShipStation?

All five platforms offer a 4x6 label format for thermal printers (on Etsy it is limited to USPS labels), but they do not agree on which models to name, and no printer on this page appears on all five lists. Among the six printers here, the Brother QL-1110NWB is named by Shopify and Pirate Ship, the DYMO LabelWriter 5XL by Shopify and ShipStation, and the Zebra ZD421 and Rollo X1038 by Shopify only. eBay's printing page names no models, and Etsy's official list is two other printers. Pirate Ship says any direct thermal 4x6 printer works, so the practical question is less whether a printer will print and more which labels, drivers and connections you want to live with.

We did not test these printers ourselves; this guide is built from each platform's help pages, each manufacturer's published specifications and the Amazon listings.

Shopify. Shopify's table gives availability and operating systems for each printer: the DYMO 5XL (USB) for Windows and Mac in the United States and Canada; the Brother QL-1110NWB (wireless) for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS in the United States, Canada and Australia; the Zebra ZD220 (USB) for Windows and Mac; the Zebra ZD421 (wireless) for Windows and Mac in the United States and Canada; and the Rollo X1038 (USB), sold through Rollo's website. Shopify tags the Rollo row with Android, iOS and POS Go, yet Rollo's own support page says the USB Rollo "connects by USB cable to a Windows or Mac computer only" and "does not support wireless printing from a phone". The two sources disagree about phone printing with the USB model, so check both before you rely on it.

Pirate Ship. Pirate Ship says the Brother QL1110NWB "offers every connection method possible, so you can hook it up to Windows, Mac, iOS, or Android via WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, or USB". It pitches the QL1100 at sellers who "don't need the wireless connection options", and advises downloading Brother's current drivers because the QL1100 can show connection issues without them. Pirate Ship also publishes a Mac setup guide for Rollo printers, and its label-buying guide covers the DYMO LabelWriter 4XL rather than the 5XL.

ShipStation. ShipStation prints either through its ShipStation Connect app or a PDF viewer. Its printing article lists "Rollo label printers" and wireless or network printers among those not supported with ShipStation Connect ("though some wireless or network printers may work"), and says you may still use the Download PDF or Browser Print method. For DYMO it says the 4XL and 5XL "do require DYMO-approved label rolls".

eBay and Etsy. eBay says the label size "can only be adjusted before purchasing the label". Etsy walks through Shop Manager, Settings, Shipping settings, Shipping Label Options and then "Label printers" under Downloading labels, and adds: "some members have successfully used other 4 x 6 inch label printers." Rollo's eBay setup page says "Rollo is fully compatible with labels generated through eBay" once you choose the 4 x 6 PDF format, and Rollo's "Official Information about Rollo and Rollo Ship" page says Etsy "is not a direct integration" for its Rollo Ship app, so Etsy sellers create labels manually there.

Printer notes

Brother QL-1110NWB. The model Shopify and Pirate Ship both name. Brother lists 300 dpi direct thermal printing, an auto cutter and a free iPrint&Label app for printing from an Apple or Android mobile device. It uses Brother DK rolls, and Brother warns that "using non-genuine Brother replacement labels may damage" the printer and "may not be covered under warranty". Check the current price of the Brother QL-1110NWB on Amazon.

Brother QL-1100. Pirate Ship's USB pick. Brother lists the same 300 dpi direct thermal printing and auto cutter, with USB and USB Host interfaces only and the same DK-roll warning. It is not on Shopify's table.

Rollo X1038 and X1040. The USB X1038 is the Rollo on Shopify's table; the Wireless X1040 is not. Rollo rates both at 203 dpi, and says the X1040 prints over Wi-Fi and AirPrint while the X1038 is driver-based for Mac and Windows. Rollo's own pages disagree on drivers for the X1040: its Wireless product page says "No Driver Needed", while its compatibility FAQ tells Windows and Mac users of both models to download the driver. Rollo says its printers work with any shipping software that outputs a 4x6 label, and its support site has setup articles for Shopify, eBay and ShipStation. Check the current price of the Rollo USB printer on Amazon.

DYMO LabelWriter 5XL. Named by Shopify (USB; Windows and Mac) and ShipStation. DYMO's guide lists 300 dpi direct thermal printing, USB and Ethernet connections and a 4.16 in. maximum print width. It works only with Authentic DYMO LW labels, and DYMO's warranty does not cover damage "caused by the use of labels other than Authentic DYMO Labels". Etsy's help page names the 4XL, not the 5XL. Check the current price of the DYMO LabelWriter 5XL on Amazon.

Zebra ZD421. Zebra lists 203 dpi as standard with 300 dpi optional. ShipStation names other Zebra models, not the ZD421, and Etsy names the GC 420d. The Amazon listing does not say which connection module comes with the unit, so confirm it before you count on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Check the current price of the Zebra ZD421 on Amazon.

Check the labels before the printer

Label supply is where "works with" turns into a real constraint. DYMO's user guide for the 550 series, which includes the 5XL, says the printers "work only with Authentic DYMO LW Labels". Brother's printers take DK rolls, and Pirate Ship's label guide lists the continuous DK-2243 and DK-2246 rolls and the die-cut DK-1241 and DK-1247 labels for its 4x6 Brother models. Rollo says it does not require proprietary labels but that third-party performance "cannot be guaranteed". For Zebra and other direct thermal 4x6 printers, Pirate Ship advises buying direct thermal rather than thermal transfer paper and checking that the roll's core fits the printer.

Which one to pick

  • Shopify and Pirate Ship both matter to you: the Brother QL-1110NWB is the one model both name.
  • You use ShipStation Connect: ShipStation lists Rollo printers as unsupported there and expects printers on USB, so a USB-connected DYMO, Zebra or Brother fits its guidance better.
  • You print from a phone: pick a wireless model. Pirate Ship says the QL1110NWB can be hooked up to iOS or Android via WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, or USB, and Rollo says the X1040 prints from iPhone, iPad and Android.
  • You want freedom on label brands: Rollo says it accepts any compatible direct thermal labels and Pirate Ship says Zebra and other direct thermal printers do not need specific label paper, while DYMO and Brother specify their own labels.

Asked about this one

Which label printers work with Shopify, eBay, Etsy, Pirate Ship and ShipStation?

Each platform names different models. Among the six printers on this page, Shopify's table names the DYMO LabelWriter 5XL, Brother QL-1110NWB, Zebra ZD421 and Rollo X1038; Pirate Ship recommends the Brother QL-1110NWB and QL-1100; and ShipStation names the DYMO LabelWriter 5XL. eBay's printing page names no models, and Etsy's list names two printers that are not on this page.

Can I use a regular desktop printer instead of a thermal label printer?

Yes. Shopify says a standard desktop printer works if you choose the 8.5 x 11 in. paper option, eBay lets you print on a home printer, Pirate Ship says it prints on any kind of printer, and ShipStation accepts standard printers. Etsy's page describes printing on 8.5 x 11 in. white paper or self-adhesive label sheets with an inkjet or laser printer, and treats 4 x 6 label printers as a separate, USPS-only option.

Do Rollo printers work with ShipStation?

Rollo publishes a ShipStation setup that sets the label to 4 x 6. ShipStation's own article excludes Rollo only from ShipStation Connect and says Download PDF and Browser Print still work.

Does the Zebra ZD421 print wirelessly?

Only if it has the optional radio. Zebra lists Wi-Fi with Bluetooth as options, and Shopify's table labels the ZD421 as wireless, but the Amazon listing title does not state the configuration.

Is there one printer every platform names?

No. Among these six, the Brother QL-1110NWB is named by two platforms (Shopify and Pirate Ship) and so is the DYMO 5XL (Shopify and ShipStation). eBay's printing page names no models and Etsy names two printers that are not on this page.
