Zebra ZD421 vs Rollo Wireless: Is a Zebra Worth It for a Home Seller?

Is a Zebra worth it for a home seller? Only if you need what Rollo does not list

For a home seller printing 4x6 shipping labels from Shopify, eBay, Etsy or Pirate Ship, the Rollo Wireless covers the basic job on paper: it and the Zebra ZD421 both print 4x6 labels at 203 dpi as standard, with near-identical rated speeds. The ZD421 earns its place if you want options Rollo does not list, such as a 300 dpi model, thermal-transfer ribbon printing, a field-installable cutter or peeler, or a place on Shopify's supported-printer table. The ZP450 is a UPS-specific printer rather than a general home-seller one: Zebra describes it as a custom UPS printer, sold exclusively for use with UPS shipping applications.

What the Zebra ZD421 adds

Zebra sells the ZD421 in direct thermal, thermal transfer and ribbon-cartridge versions, at 203 dpi or an optional 300 dpi. The finer resolution has a cost: Zebra rates the printer at 6 in./152 mm per second at 203 dpi but only 4 in./102 mm per second at 300 dpi. Standard connections are USB 2.0 and USB Host, and Zebra's FAQ says the cutter and peeler kits can be fitted in the field. Zebra also lists "Shipping and Receiving" among the printer's common uses.

The ZD421 is one of two Zebras in Shopify's supported-printer table (the other is the ZD220), listed as "Zebra Label Printer (Wireless)" for Windows and Mac in the United States and Canada. Read that label with care. Wireless is an option on the ZD421, and the Amazon listing title reads "Zebra ZD421 Thermal Shipping Label Printer | 4x6 | No Ink Required" without saying which connection module comes in the box or whether it is the direct thermal or the ribbon version. Zebra's FAQ says its thermal transfer and cartridge models can be configured to print in direct thermal mode. Zebra's spec sheet adds that "BLE is provided for use with Zebra printer setup mobile app only", so do not assume phone printing without the optional radio.

There is a setup trade-off too. ShipStation's printing help article says "Zebra printers have a more involved setup process" than some other thermal options, though it names the Zebra ZD220, ZD420, GC420d, ZSB Series and ZT410 rather than the ZD421. If the options above matter to you, Check the current price of the Zebra ZD421 on Amazon and confirm the model and connection module on the listing page.

What the Rollo Wireless covers

Rollo's Wireless printer (X1040) is a direct-thermal printer at 203 dpi. Rollo rates it at 150 mm/s and says it takes "any direct thermal label, 1.57 to 4.1 inches wide". It prints over Wi-Fi and AirPrint. Rollo's own pages disagree on drivers: its Wireless product page says "No Driver Needed", while its compatibility FAQ tells Windows and Mac users of both models to download the driver. Rollo's Windows setup article adds a manual driver route for computers where the printer does not show up in the Add a printer list, and says the driver does not yet support ARM-based Windows computers. Rollo's support site says the Wireless model is AirPrint certified and works with iPad, iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows, Chromebook and Linux.

You do not need Rollo Ship, the company's own shipping app: Rollo says its printers work with any shipping software that outputs a 4x6 label. On labels, Rollo says it does not require proprietary rolls, but that "the performance of third-party labels cannot be guaranteed". Rollo says to "Buy from the official website in the US" for its 1-year replacement warranty and 30-day money-back guarantee, and that "Other retailers follow their own listing terms," so read the seller's terms on the Amazon listing. Check the current price of the Rollo Wireless on Amazon to compare.

The ZP450 is a UPS printer

The question names the Zebra ZP450, so here is what Zebra's own support page says about it: "Zebra ZP450 is a custom UPS printer." The page adds that ZP450 UPS (ZPL) printers "are designed and sold exclusively for use with UPS Shipping Applications only" and that Zebra "does not provide Software and Driver Support for these printers as the support is provided directly by UPS." Zebra's own support is limited to printing a Windows test page plus standard calibration and hardware issues.

For a seller shipping through Shopify, eBay, Etsy or Pirate Ship, that settles it. Shopify's, Pirate Ship's, ShipStation's and Etsy's printer lists do not name the ZP450, and since Zebra sells it for UPS applications only, it is a poor fit when your labels come from a marketplace or Pirate Ship. If you want a Zebra for desktop shipping labels, the models those lists do name are the ZD220 and ZD421 (Shopify); the ZD220, ZD420, GC420d, ZSB Series and ZT410 (ShipStation); and the GC 420d (Etsy).

Platform notes for this pair

Shopify. Shopify says "For best results, use Shopify-supported hardware to print your shipping labels." The ZD421 is in its table. The Rollo in the table is the USB X1038, not the Wireless X1040 compared here, so the Wireless model's fit with Shopify rests on Rollo's own pages. Those describe Rollo Ship's Shopify integration, and a Rollo setup article says to click Change format after buying a label in Shopify and choose 4 x 6.

Pirate Ship. Pirate Ship says any direct thermal 4x6 printer works with it, so either printer is in scope. Its own recommendations are the Brother QL-1110NWB and QL-1100, and it publishes a Mac setup guide for Rollo printers. It also advises buying direct thermal rather than thermal transfer label paper and checking that the roll's core fits your printer. Zebra lists 0.5 in. and 1.0 in. cores as standard on the ZD421, with adapters for larger sizes.

ShipStation. ShipStation's printing article says any supported USB model that prints 4x6 labels will work. It lists "Rollo label printers" among the printers not supported with ShipStation Connect, the app that routes print jobs to printers on your workstation, and notes you may still use the Download PDF or Browser Print method. ShipStation adds that its support cannot troubleshoot those printers with Connect. Rollo has its own ShipStation setup article (last modified in 2023), which says to set ShipStation's document settings to 4 x 6. The ZD421 is not named in ShipStation's article.

eBay. eBay's help page offers a 4 x 6 in. print format and names no printer models. Rollo's eBay setup page says "Rollo is fully compatible with labels generated through eBay" once you choose the 4 x 6 PDF format.

Etsy. Etsy's help page says "We officially support the DYMO LabelWriter 4XL and Zebra GC 420d label printers. However, some members have successfully used other 4 x 6 inch label printers." It also says only USPS labels can be formatted for 4 x 6 label printers. Neither printer here is on that named list. Rollo's "Official Information about Rollo and Rollo Ship" page says Etsy "is not a direct integration" for Rollo Ship, so Etsy sellers create labels manually there.

Which one should a home seller buy?

Choose the Rollo Wireless if you print standard 4x6 labels from a laptop, phone or tablet and want the smaller footprint. Rollo lists 8 x 4 x 4 in., against 8.69 x 6.98 x 5.93 in. for Zebra's direct thermal ZD421, and Rollo says the Wireless model is AirPrint certified.

Choose the Zebra ZD421 if you want 300 dpi, a ribbon-based thermal transfer model, a cutter or peeler, Ethernet, or a Zebra model that Shopify's table names. If you plan to print through ShipStation Connect, note ShipStation's Rollo exclusion; Zebra is one of the brands ShipStation says work well, though it names other Zebra models than the ZD421.

Skip the ZP450 unless UPS has told you to buy it for UPS software. If you want the printer Pirate Ship itself recommends, look at the Brother QL-1110NWB instead of either of these.

Asked about this one

Is a Zebra (ZD421, ZP450) worth it for a home seller, vs Rollo?

Only if you want something the Rollo Wireless does not list, such as a 300 dpi model, thermal-transfer ribbon printing, a field-installable cutter or peeler, Ethernet, or a place on Shopify's supported-printer table. For standard 4x6 labels both list 203 dpi as standard with near-identical rated speeds. The ZP450 is a custom UPS printer that Zebra says is designed and sold exclusively for use with UPS Shipping Applications.

Is the Zebra ZP450 a good printer for a home seller?

Only if UPS's own shipping software is how you ship. Zebra's support page calls the ZP450 a custom UPS printer, designed and sold exclusively for use with UPS shipping applications, with software and driver support coming from UPS rather than Zebra.

Does the Zebra ZD421 print over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth out of the box?

Not necessarily. Zebra's product page lists Wi-Fi 6 with Bluetooth 5.3 (optional), Wi-Fi 5 with Bluetooth 4.1 (optional) and Bluetooth Low Energy, and the spec sheet says the Bluetooth Low Energy connection is for the Zebra setup app only. The Amazon listing title does not say which module is included, so check the listing page.

Does ShipStation work with a Rollo printer?

Rollo documents a ShipStation setup that sets labels to 4 x 6. ShipStation's printing article lists Rollo printers as unsupported with ShipStation Connect only, and says the Download PDF and Browser Print methods still work.

Can I use any 4x6 labels in these printers?

Rollo says you can use any compatible direct thermal labels but cannot guarantee third-party performance. Zebra lists roll-fed or fan-fold media, die cut or continuous. Pirate Ship advises buying direct thermal labels and checking that the roll's core fits your printer.
